From Stranger to Family: My Alphonsian Youth Gathering Story

A personal reflection on faith, friendship, and mission during the Alphonsian Youth Gathering in the Philippines from May 12–20, 2026.

As I reflect on my Asia Oceania Alphonsian Youth Gathering experience, I’m filled with gratitude and a heart full of memories. From the moment I arrived in Cebu, I knew it was going to be a life-changing journey. The warmth of the people, the vibrant culture, and the sense of community – it all felt like home. I remember feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness as I stepped off the boat, not knowing what to expect, but everyone was so welcoming and made me feel at ease.

As we arrived in Cebu tired and hungry, we were accompanied by one of the committee who drove us to Jollibee to eat and then to Holy Family, a special place for me. We spent our first days in a place so unfamiliar, yet so welcoming. I’m grateful to have found people who treat me like family. They showed me that life can be simple, yet full of joy and love.

Being the youngest delegate was a unique experience. I thought it’d be tough to fit in, but they made me feel like their little sister, everyone’s little sister. I warmed up quickly, maybe because I’m an extrovert who loves socializing and making friends. I was able to connect with people from different countries, cultures, and backgrounds, and it was amazing to see how we all came together as one big family.

I’m grateful to represent RYM-Ilobac and share our faith with delegates across Asia and Oceania. The experiences, friends, and lessons are treasures I’ll cherish forever. From immersion programs that opened my eyes to the realities of others, to the uplifting praise and worship sessions that moved me to tears and taught me how go conmect more to God, every moment was a testament to this generation’s faith. I was able to participate in various activities, such as the Santacruzan, was such a tiring but wonderful experience.

A special thanks to Mama Dolly, Ate Iya, Ate Lyka, and Ate Katerina – my foster family who welcomed me with open arms. They showed me that life can be simple yet enjoyable, and I’m grateful for their love and support. Big thanks to Ate Iya who accompanied me and my foster sister when Mama Dolly was not around, and to Ate Katerina who made way and let us use her room.

To the Redemptorist communities, volunteers, and everyone who made this journey possible – your kindness, generosity, and love won’t be forgotten. This experience empowered me to be a light in my community, and to share my story and inspire others with it. I learned so much from this experience, and I know that it will inspire me in ny journey.

The memories of Pista sa Nayon and Taizé prayers will stay with me. The friendships, laughter, and tears reminded me that I was not alone in this journey. I’ll always cherish the moments we shared, the songs we sang and danced to and the stories we told.

To the friends I made along the way – Hany, Da, Zoey, Melfred, Joshua, Elicia, Emily, Anjela, Fr. Anthony, Fr. Phi, Iligan, Davao, Legazpi, Dumaguete pips… I may not mention all of you, but thank you for the souvenirs, but most of all, the love that you guys have given me for 8 days and also for treating me as a younger sibling. You guys made this experience even more special, and I’ll always be grateful for that.

As I look back, I’m reminded of the words “Youth Empowered Sent.” I’m grateful to be part of a passionate, compassionate generation committed to making a difference. Let’s keep the fire burning and spread the love, mga ka-RYM!

Until we meet again, Cebu!
