Guided by the Redemptorist charism of proclaiming plantiful redemption, and inspired by the missionary zeal and pastoral wisdom of Saint Alphonsus Liguori, the Province of Cebu carries out its mission through various pastoral and evangelizing ministries. Rooted in compassion, moral sensitivity, closeness to the people, and devotion to Our Mother of Perpetual Help, these ministries respond to the spiritual, social, and missionary needs of communities—especially the poor and the abandoned—across the Visayas and Mindanao. In collaboration with lay partners, the Redemptorists continue to serve the Church by forming faith-filled communities, nurturing vocations, accompanying the youth, and fostering ongoing spiritual renewal.
Rural and Urban Mission
In the central and southern regions of the Philippines, the Redemptorist Province of Cebu has taken on a vital role in the Church’s mission, especially in the Visayas and Mindanao. Their focus goes beyond traditional evangelization. It’s rooted in building strong Basic Ecclesial Communities (BECs) and deepening devotion to Our Mother of Perpetual Help—a devotion that continues to inspire hope among the faithful.
Over the years, the Redemptorist mission teams have their presence in both rural and urban communities. From distant mountain chapels to bustling city parishes, their reach has grown through the efforts of dedicated mission teams operating across Central Visayas, Western Visayas, Eastern Visayas, and Mindanao.
Today, three core mission teams carry this work forward: the Cebu Redemptorist Urban Mission Team, the West Visayas Redemptorist Mission Team, and the Redemptorist Itinerant Mission Team. Their presence is especially felt in Cebu, Iloilo, and Leyte—where they continue to walk alongside the people, living out the Redemptorist call to be close to the poor and abandoned.
Also, the mission is not carried by the Redemptorists alone. Lay missionaries have become an essential part of this journey. These dedicated men and women work alongside the Redemptorists, often going to the same far-flung areas and helping organize communities, lead prayer sessions. Their presence ensures that the mission is truly rooted in the people, reflecting a shared faith and responsibility.
Churches
Across the world, Redemptorist churches are known as places of comfort and welcome—true sanctuaries where people find peace, belonging, and a sense of home. These spaces offer more than a place of prayer and worship; they embody an openness and inclusivity that make all feel valued and safe.
Especially in our shrines, this spirit is deeply rooted in the Church’s missionary identity. While the call to reach the peripheries remains central, these sacred spaces serve as places of permanent mission—centers where faith is not only nourished but also sent forth.
Alongside the regular celebration of the Eucharist, many of these churches are vibrant centers of faith and community life—offering catechism programs, regular confessions, social outreach, and the Novena to Our Mother of Perpetual Help. Those designated as parish churches also serve as sacred spaces for life’s important moments, such as weddings and baptisms, drawing families together in celebration and faith.
Redemptorist churches and parishes are located in Cebu City, Dumaguete City, Iloilo City, Tacloban City, Davao City, and Iligan City. The Sacred Heart Chaplaincy in Mandaue City is also currently under the pastoral care of the Redemptorists.
Vocations Ministry
Primarily focused on the pre-formation stage, the Vocations Ministry is tasked with promoting the Redemptorist way of life and guiding individuals through their initial discernment. Members of this ministry engage in a variety of initiatives to raise awareness and inspire interest in the missionary vocation—through vocation campaigns, school and parish visits, discernment retreats, and active outreach on social media platforms.
Each Redemptorist community has its own local Vocations Office to support these efforts on the ground, while the Provincial Office serves as the central hub for coordination, planning, and overall direction of vocation promotion across the Province. Lay vocations promoters also play an important role, working alongside the clergy to reach out to potential candidates and support the mission of encouraging new vocations.
Redemptorist Youth Ministry
The Redemptorist Youth Ministry in the Province of Cebu is committed to journeying with young people as they grow in faith and discipleship. Rooted in the charism of compassion and mission, this ministry seeks to inspire the youth to follow Christ the Redeemer by embracing lives marked by love, mercy, and service. Also central to this mission is the deepening of devotion to Our Mother of Perpetual Help.
This ministry continues to develop programs such as faith formation sessions, retreats, mission, and social action initiatives that encourage young people to deepen their relationship with Christ and live out His Gospel in their daily lives. It strives to build a welcoming community where young people from diverse backgrounds find support, fellowship, and encouragement.
Retreat Ministry
The Retreat Ministry has long been a vital part of the Redemptorist mission in the Philippines. Even in the early years of their presence in the country, conducting retreats and recollections was recognized as an essential way to nurture spiritual growth among clergy, religious, and laypeople alike—with a special focus on the youth.
Through thoughtfully guided retreats, the Redemptorists aim to help individuals deepen their awareness of their Christian vocation and live out their calling more fully within their own ecclesial communities. These spiritual encounters provide a chance for participants to step away from daily distractions, reflect on their faith journey, and experience God’s presence in a profound and renewing way.
Retreats and recollections are held not only in Redemptorist retreat houses but also in various other locations to meet the needs of different communities. In the Southern Philippines, three dedicated centers offer peaceful and supportive environments for this ministry: the Redemptorist Retreat House (Holy Family) in Cebu, the Scala Retreat House in Bacolod, and St. Clement’s Retreat House in Iloilo.
Through this ministry, the Redemptorists continue their longstanding commitment to fostering ongoing conversion, spiritual renewal, and a vibrant missionary spirit among all who seek to grow in faith.
Alphonsian Lay Formation Institute
The Alphonsian Lay Formation Institute (ALFI) is a formation program designed specifically for Redemptorist lay cooperators within the Province of Cebu. Operating at the provincial level, ALFI’s primary goal is to deepen the Christian faith and personal relationship with God among lay cooperators.
Beyond spiritual growth, the program emphasizes the integration of faith with social commitment, recognizing this as essential to their service to the wider community. ALFI also seeks to broaden and deepen the pastoral understanding and perspective of lay cooperators, equipping them to more effectively participate in the mission and ministry of the Church.
In response to changing times, technology has become an important tool in training lay missionaries. Online sessions and classes are now regularly held, featuring reliable resource persons who provide valuable formation and guidance, ensuring continuous learning and growth even amid challenges.
Media Ministry
The media ministry of the Province is carried out by the Provincial Media and Evangelization Office—the media arm of the Redemptorist Province of Cebu—committed to advancing the mission of evangelization through the effective use of both traditional and modern media platforms.
Also known as the Redemptorist All-Media Access Ministry, this office maintains an active online presence through various social media platforms and its website, sharing updates and information from the different ministries and communities across the Province. The media office and studio are located at the Provincial Center in Cebu, serving as the hub for content creation and communication efforts.
