Jn 3, 16-18
What is the core of the mystery of the most holy Trinity? It is no other than love. God the Father loves God the Son who in turn loves the Father. The love between the Father and the Son is God the Holy Spirit. It is perfect love, uniting three divine persons who are but one God. If we live in love, we are united with one another and with God’s family – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Love in the Trinity is giving. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son”. In our life, giving is not easy; self-giving is painful. But God the Son gives us the example by his self-sacrifice on the cross. “No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” Total self-giving leads to strong unity. It builds strong families and communities. In many countries, couples are reluctant to bear children for fear that the demands of family life might affect their career or future. They put their elderly in nursing homes since they are too busy looking for money. Poverty causes many parents to leave their families behind to seek well-paying jobs abroad. Sometimes, unfortunately, that ends up in marital infidelity, family breakdown, emotionally damaged children, and more emotionally wounded people. It is not uncommon that materialism and selfishness tend to produce loneliness and unhappiness. When you are obsessed with the desire to have more, you extol self-sufficiency and autonomy while you overlook the value of giving and sharing in the family. The Second Person of the Trinity became man and revealed to us God’s love. After his death and resurrection, he gifted us with the Holy Spirit and continues to invite us to share in the eternal life of love of the Holy Trinity. Our only way to lasting happiness is to form our lives in union with and after the example of the Holy Trinity, realizing our family and community life in constant exchange of mutual love. Heavenly Father, help us find concrete expressions of our love and faith in the Most Holy Trinity. Brothers and sisters, let us become living reflections of the love and unity of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
