SEED SOWN: Salt and Light of the World

Mt 5,13-16

When Jesus tells us that we are the salt of the earth, he means us to live out our discipleship. We uphold God’s moral standards and be the seasoning to preserve society’s well-being. We bring out what’s good in people as God intends. We embody Jesus’ teachings in our lives. Society will be full of corruption and decay if our lives don’t reflect our discipleship.

We reflect Jesus’ light like a city set on a hill. We are to be the light that cancels darkness and enlightens the world. That is what Jesus means when He says, “You are the light of the world”. It is a powerful contrast. We must see the contrast between our own integrity and the darkness of our world.

It is about others observing us. Even if they don’t hear about Jesus, they watch if our faith shines in our lives. “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works.” Jesus is saying that before we speak up, we show up. Our ability to shine is gauged by how our good works reveal God’s presence.

A student drives to a nearby town. He passes through an area with an eerie darkness due to a power brown-out. It is frightening to drive through that area. Then, he notices a light ahead, shining like a beacon. He sees a small chapel – the only light in the darkness – a house of worship lighting up the world.

That’s how others should see us – a light in a world darkened by sin. As Jesus’ followers “walk as children of light”. Difficult as it may be, we can only try to live by what Jesus teaches. With God’s grace, we can bring light to the world. Let us allow the Holy Spirit to make us vessels of love, mercy and compassion! If we allow Him, we will be amazed at what we can do in a world of darkness and sin!

“Heavenly Father, you guide us by the light of your saving truth. Fill our hearts and minds with your light and truth that we may see your ways clearly and obey your will for our lives.

Brothers and sisters, may we radiate God’s light and truth to others both in word and in deed.
